Cleaning Your Grill with a Wood BBQ Scraper
Cooking with fire
Do you like to grill stuff on the barbecue? I do. I like to cook generally, but cooking stuff over fire is more appealing. I’m not sure if it is a primal thing or I just like the taste of smoke. Actually I also enjoy frying and stir-frying so maybe I just prefer the act of watching food cook.
Wire brushes are bad news
After the cooking of course, comes the cleaning. Until recently I have always used a wire brush to clean my BBQ grill. It is an effective tool and all those wire bristles get into the nooks and crannies of my BBQ grate. Unfortunately it turns out the bristles can come off and end up in the nooks and crannies of our throats and digestive systems. Surgeons are now recommending that we stop using wire brushes to clean the grill because of this hazard.
Clean the BBQ with a wood scraper instead
I had read the news headlines warning about the risks of the wire brush and hadn’t given much thought to an alternative way of cleaning. Then I saw someone asking about wood bbq scrapers in a Facebook group so I did some research and some testing of potential designs. The result is that I now have two sizes of wood bbq scrapers available for sale.
Good for you and the environment
These wood bbq scrapers are made with reclaimed cedar. A year ago I picked up the majority of the wood from a demolished cedar shed and while I have been making use of the 2×4’s that comprised the frame of the shed I haven’t yet had a use for the weathered cedar that made up the exterior of the shed. Many of the boards were cracked and broken. Some were rotten in sections and others were severely weathered.
With these wood bbq scrapers I now have a use for most of the broken boards. I like to find ways to reuse wood that would otherwise end up in the landfill. It makes me happy that by reusing these broken cedar boards I can not only save the wood from the landfill and give it a new life, I can also help protect you and your family.
