My Favourite Day of the Year
Christmas is pretty much my favourite time of the year. I love Christmas lights on houses. I love the smell of a Christmas Tree. I love the excitement my kids carry bundled up inside of them. I even like Christmas carols – not the muzak retail store carols. I recently discovered a holiday album by the late Sharon Jones that is my new favourite.
Family and Food
Christmas to me is a time of family, giving and lots of food. When I was a kid my dad’s parents came to our place on Christmas Eve and hung out with us for Christmas morning. This was a tradition that came about, because they had a tendency to get up very early and drive the hour from their house to my parents and show up early Christmas morning. After lunch we piled into the car to see my other grandparents and spend the afternoon and evening with them and my aunts, uncles and cousins, stuffing ourselves with loads of delicious food. If my parents were lucky I didn’t throw up en route to the second part of the celebration…
The Christmas Morning Gene
My dad’s father – one of my two grandfathers named Thomas for whom I named this business – was always so excited about Christmas and always woke up early because he was too excited to sleep. This continued into his 80’s. My dad inherited the Christmas morning gene and passed it on to me. I am generally up at least a couple of hours before my kids and then I have to wait for everyone else to wake up. I read or listen to podcasts or write, basically anything to kill time while I wait.
Gifts I Made
The past few months have been busy ones over here at Thomas Woodcrafts making Christmas gifts for other people. It is only my second year in business and my second fall holiday season. This year in addition to being excited for my family to open their gifts I will also be thinking about all the people, mostly kids who will be getting gifts under the tree that I made with my hands. It is amazing to me to think about all the kids who are going to be playing with wooden cars and blocks and in rockers that came out of my head and workshop. I hope they love them and I am excited to be a part of all of your Christmas mornings too.
Merry Christmas to all of you who celebrate. I’ll think of you while I am waiting for my family to wake up and see what is under the tree for them.
